4x4buddy Privacy Policy
Effective June 15, 2026
This policy explains how 4x4buddy handles information when you use the app and the 4x4buddy website. 4x4buddy is built for off-road navigation, track recording, vehicle awareness, points of interest, and convoy coordination, so some features depend on location, account, and vehicle telemetry data. By using 4x4buddy you also agree to our Terms of Use.
Short version: we do not use advertising SDKs, analytics SDKs, crash-reporting SDKs, or cross-app tracking. We collect only the data needed to make app features work, and you can export or permanently delete your account data at any time.
Information the app handles
- Precise location: latitude, longitude, altitude, speed, heading, and related GPS data used for map position, track recording, track sync, and live convoy sharing.
- Account information: email address, display name, profile/call-sign details, and user ID when you sign in with Google or Apple.
- Tracks and track metadata: recorded routes, timestamps, titles, descriptions, and samples you choose to save or sync.
- Vehicle telemetry (OBD): OBD-II readings such as RPM, speed, engine load, throttle, coolant temperature, oil temperature, intake air temperature, manifold pressure, and battery voltage when you connect a compatible adapter and record or sync a track.
- Convoy information: live position updates and your chosen call sign / vehicle, shared with members of a convoy you join or create while the session is active.
- Points of interest (POIs): markers, names, notes, and photos you create on your device, plus any you choose to share.
- Device and settings data: map preferences, layer choices, compass, gyroscope, accelerometer, and app settings used locally for app features.
When information leaves your device
Location, track, account, and vehicle telemetry data can leave your device when you sign in, sync tracks, upload track samples, share a track, or use live convoy sharing. Convoy location is shared through 4x4buddy systems with other members of the same convoy so the group can see each other on the map.
Points of interest, map preferences, compass, gyroscope, accelerometer, and similar device data stay on your device unless a feature you use clearly requires syncing or sharing (for example, sharing a POI or track).
How we use information
- Show your position and heading on the map.
- Record, save, sync, share, and delete tracks.
- Display convoy member positions during a convoy session.
- Show vehicle tilt and OBD-II telemetry while driving and in recorded tracks.
- Keep your signed-in account and synced tracks available across devices.
- Operate, secure, and troubleshoot the app and related services.
Third-party services
4x4buddy relies on a small number of third-party services to provide core features. These include map and satellite imagery providers, offline map-pack hosting, sign-in providers (Google and Apple) when you choose to sign in, app stores for distribution and any future purchases, and Bluetooth OBD-II adapters you connect. These providers handle data under their own privacy policies and terms. We do not include advertising, analytics, or crash-reporting SDKs in the app.
How long we keep information
- Synced tracks and account data are kept until you delete them or delete your account.
- Convoy positions are shared live during an active convoy session and are not retained as a permanent location history after the session ends.
- Anonymous app-install records (a client-generated device token, no email or name) are automatically removed after a period of inactivity.
- Deleted tracks and accounts: when you delete a track or your account, the associated stored data is removed, and any residual sample files are reclaimed by a routine cleanup so they do not linger indefinitely.
What we do not do
- We do not sell personal information.
- We do not use your information for advertising.
- We do not use cross-app or cross-site tracking.
- We do not include analytics, advertising, or crash-reporting SDKs in the app.
Security
Data sent between the app and 4x4buddy services is encrypted in transit using HTTPS or secure WebSocket connections. No system can be guaranteed perfectly secure, but we design the app to send only the data needed for its features.
Your choices, export, and deletion
- You can use core map features without signing in.
- You can choose whether to sign in with Google or Apple.
- You can choose whether to record tracks, sync tracks, connect an OBD-II adapter, share content, or join a convoy.
- You can delete individual tracks in the app. Deleting a synced track also removes it from the cloud sync copy.
- Export your data: you can download a copy of your account data as JSON, either from inside the app or from the web at 4x4buddy.com/account — no app install needed.
- Delete your account: you can permanently delete your account and its data from inside the app or from 4x4buddy.com/account. Convoys you own are transferred to another member if any, otherwise deleted.
Children
4x4buddy is intended for drivers and off-road trip participants. It is not directed to children.
